Home Renovations

Modifying and adapting key aspects of your family’s home to improve your photosensitive day to day

One of the most impactful ways Shadow Jumpers supports our community is by transforming homes into safe havens for families living with photosensitivity. For many of our families, even a sliver of sunlight streaming through a window or gaps in everyday structures can trigger painful and dangerous reactions. What most people take for granted—relaxing in a living room, walking down a hallway, sitting at a dining table—can become daily risks when sunlight isn’t carefully managed.

The Tonhaeuser Family

“Shadow Jumpers listed to our story and completely transformed our garage, allowing our CEP daughter the chance to partially outdoors with her siblings while also being shielded from the sun. The supplied us with turf, a screen garage door, a pool (with a water slide), furniture, play areas and more. Our garage was unreconizable for our best summer to date!”

The Kypreos Family

“Shadow Jumpers learned that our EPP daughter spent most of her time recovering from liver complications in her sunny bedroom. Before we know it they started the process to convert our unfinished basement into both a new bedroom and a common area for her to spend her time during the sunniest of days. We need this organization more than they will ever know.”

  • Through our Home Renovations & Modifications Program, Shadow Jumpers works directly with families to identify the barriers within their living spaces and create tailored solutions that make daily life possible, comfortable, and safe.

  • Every renovation is personalized—some projects are small adjustments with big impact, while others are full-scale modifications that reshape how a family uses their home.

    • UV-Protective Window Films & Shades – Installing specialized films and coverings that block harmful rays while still letting natural light brighten a space.

    • Covered Outdoor Access – Building protective awnings, shade structures, or enclosed patios so children can safely step outside without fear.

    • Entryway & Vehicle Adaptations – Adding covered walkways, carport shelters, or vehicle tinting to ensure transitions in and out of the home are safe.

    • Custom DIY Safety Solutions – Supporting families with creative, affordable adaptations that make their unique spaces more livable.

  • These changes aren’t just about construction, they’re about restoring dignity, independence, and joy. A renovated home means a child can eat dinner at the table with their family without pain, or a teenager can safely open their blinds in the morning without fear. Parents gain peace of mind knowing their home truly protects their child. And families as a whole are freed from constant vigilance, able instead to focus on living, learning, and laughing together.

  • Shadow Jumpers’ home renovation projects go beyond physical safety; they create emotional security and hope. Each installation tells families: you’re not alone, your photosensitive challenges are seen, and your home can finally feel like home again.

  • In short, the bigger the project the more homework families will be asked to provide during the approval process to move forward. For families applying for assistance for anything but window tinting, they should include as many photos of their space, detailed descriptions to what they are looking to accomplish, photo examples of the potential finished product and more. Families seeking major renovations may be asked to connect with a local contractor in the area for initial estimates and procedures. While Shadow Jumpers covers 100% of the expenses associated with these modifications, Shadow Jumpers and its team does not perform any of the construction and defers to local approved contractors for the completion of these projects.
